Corolla's Wild Mustangs
Efforts are underway to fund a university study to determine exactly what affects these wild horses may have on the flora and fauna of the area they inhabit. It is hoped the planned study will answer many questions and put an end to the objections of some of those involved.
Even as the long-term fate of Corolla's wild Spanish mustangs hangs in limbo while a solution to the imposed restriction of an unsustainable herd size is researched, their immediate safety is once more in serious question. The very problem which sequestered them away from highway traffic more than ten years ago has reemerged, even in the relative safety of their remote sanctuary.

In March, 2009, and again just two months later in May, two stallions were hit by vehicles on the beach. With injuries too severe to be treated, both stallions had to be euthanized. Such tragic news only added to the sad fact that seven horses had been shot by unknown persons in the recent past. These criminal acts were further blows to the hopes of sustaining sufficient genetic diversity among the already endangered herd.
As if all these pressures weren't enough, developers have long been pressing to get highway NC12 extended north of Corolla into this last remote spot. Additionally, a request to rezone some of the land in the horse sanctuary for a 50-room inn and shopping complex has been put forth once again after already being turned down four years prior.

After nearly half a millennium of surviving on these rugged and remote shores of the New World, there now seems to be a real chance the story of these inspiring survivors from the history and legends of North Carolina's Outer Banks could come to a tragic close.
Where will this centuries old story of these wild Spanish mustangs of Corolla lead? What unexpected and undeserved misfortunes will be heaped upon them next? What will save them, if indeed any solution can be begged, bought, finagled or engineered to save their freedom?
